Luton 19mppa Consultation

19mppa Consultation

From 7th October to 11th November 2020 we are consulting on proposals to increase passenger capacity from 18 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 19 mppa.

London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport has long been an essential part of the region’s transport network, providing national and international connections, supporting businesses and creating jobs for local people.

In the months before the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport was operating close to its permitted capacity of 18 mppa. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, felt in every corner of the tourism and travel sectors, has resulted in major changes in how we have had to operate the airport and has had economic consequences on our supply chain and local community.

To ensure the airport continues to thrive we are preparing for a period of recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. An important step will be increasing the airport’s capacity from 18 to 19mppa. This is a key element of our strategy for recovery and future growth and will help to support the local, regional and national economy.

Our proposals to increase passenger capacity to 19mppa will not require any physical changes to the airport infrastructure, but will seek to vary conditions of the airport’s existing planning permission so that it is permitted to handle 19 million passengers a year in the future.

The aim of this consultation is to:

  • share with you information on how we propose to achieve an increase from 18 to 19mppa;

  • explain how we plan to manage the environmental effects of the proposed increase in passenger numbers;

  • receive feedback and local knowledge that will allow us to further develop our proposals and strategies.
